Shopify or WooCommerce for a Pakistani Store?

8 min readNexGen Technologies

The right answer depends on how you take payment and who maintains the store — not on which platform an agency prefers to build on.

Most comparisons of these two platforms are written for a shop in Manchester or Toronto. Selling in Pakistan changes the calculation, because the two things that matter most here — cash on delivery and local payment gateways — are exactly where the platforms differ.

Where Shopify wins

Shopify handles the genuinely hard parts of running a store: uptime, security patches, PCI compliance, and a checkout that has been optimised by a company whose entire business depends on it converting. You are not going to build a better checkout than Shopify has, and you should not try.

If you sell internationally, Shopify is usually the correct answer outright. Multi-currency, duties and a checkout that a foreign buyer already recognises are worth more than the monthly fee.

Where WooCommerce wins

WooCommerce is a WordPress plugin, which means you control the server and the code. For a Pakistani store taking most orders as cash on delivery, that control matters: COD changes order confirmation, courier booking, fraud handling and returns, and those flows are easier to shape when nothing is locked.

It is also cheaper in cash terms — no monthly platform fee, no transaction percentage — but that saving is only real if someone is maintaining it. WooCommerce that nobody updates becomes a security problem, not a bargain.

The three-year cost, which is the one that matters

  • Shopify: a monthly fee in dollars, plus app subscriptions, plus transaction fees where you do not use Shopify Payments. Predictable, and it rises with your sales.
  • WooCommerce: hosting, and either your own time or a maintenance retainer. Cheaper on paper, and genuinely cheaper only when the maintenance actually happens.

A store doing modest volume usually finds WooCommerce cheaper. A store growing quickly usually finds Shopify cheaper, because the hours it does not have to spend on infrastructure are worth more than the fee.

A straightforward way to choose

  • Selling mostly abroad, card payments, want to launch fast: Shopify.
  • Selling mostly in Pakistan, mostly cash on delivery, want control over fulfilment: WooCommerce.
  • No technical person on the team and no maintenance budget: Shopify, without hesitation.
  • Unusual pricing, bundling or B2B rules: WooCommerce, or a custom build.

What should not decide it is which platform your agency prefers. Ask why they are recommending one, and if the answer is about your business rather than their convenience, it is probably sound.
